XP Split Breakdown
How to Use This Tool
Enter the total XP your party earned from a quest, raid, or match in the Total XP field. Input the number of active party members, then select your preferred split method from the dropdown. If using a weighted method, fill in the requested member details (levels or contribution scores). Click Calculate Split to see the breakdown, or Reset to clear all fields. Use the Copy Results button to save the distribution to your clipboard.
Formula and Logic
All calculations start with total available XP, which is the sum of base total XP and any optional bonus XP pool. The split method determines how this total is divided:
- Equal Split: Total XP ÷ number of party members. Every member gets the same share regardless of individual factors.
- Level-Weighted Split: Each member’s share is (member level ÷ sum of all party member levels) × total XP. Higher-level members receive a larger portion of the XP.
- Contribution-Weighted Split: Each member’s share is (member contribution score ÷ sum of all contribution scores) × total XP. Members with higher contribution (e.g., damage dealt, healing done, objectives completed) get more XP.
All results are rounded to two decimal places for readability. Minor rounding discrepancies may occur due to floating-point math, but total distributed XP will always match the available total within 0.01 XP.
Practical Notes
For tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons or Pathfinder, use the Level-Weighted method to reflect standard XP rules for parties with mixed levels. MMO and co-op game groups can use Contribution-Weighted splits to reward players who dealt more damage, healed more, or completed key objectives. Note that some games have built-in XP penalties for large parties or high-level members: adjust your total XP input to account for these game-specific modifiers before calculating. RNG-based XP bonuses (e.g., critical quest rewards) should be added to the bonus XP pool if you want to split them with the group.
Why This Tool Is Useful
Disputes over XP splits are common in gaming groups, especially for mixed-level parties or sessions with uneven participation. This tool eliminates guesswork by providing transparent, math-backed distributions that match your group’s preferred fairness rules. Streamers and content creators can use it to quickly calculate splits on-screen for viewers, while game designers can test balance for party-based progression systems. It works for any game that uses XP-based progression, from classic tabletop games to modern live-service shooters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I split XP for a party with 0 members?
No, the party size must be at least 1. If you enter 0 or a negative number, the tool will show a validation error and will not calculate results.
How do I handle decimal XP values?
The tool accepts decimal values for total and bonus XP, and rounds all final member shares to two decimal places. Most games round XP to the nearest integer, so you can manually round the results up or down to match your game’s rules.
What if my game uses a different split method?
This tool supports the three most common XP split methods for gaming groups. If your group uses a custom method, you can adjust the total XP input to pre-weight the pool before using the Equal Split method to simulate your custom rules.
Additional Guidance
Always confirm your game’s official XP rules before using calculated splits for official campaigns or ranked matches. For tabletop games, check if your game master applies bonus XP for things like roleplay, puzzle-solving, or completing side objectives, and add those to the bonus XP pool. When using contribution-weighted splits, agree on contribution scoring criteria with your group before the session to avoid post-game disputes.
