How to Use This Tool

Select your preferred grading scale from the dropdown menu at the top of the tool. If using a custom scale, enter the maximum possible score for your grading system.

Fill in the details for each test or assignment component: enter a name for the item, the score you earned, the maximum possible score, and the weight of the component as a percentage of your total grade.

Ensure the total weight of all components adds up to 100% to get an accurate final score. Click "Calculate Score" to see your overall results, letter grade, and GPA equivalent.

Use the "Reset" button to clear all inputs and return to default values. Click "Copy Results" to save your score breakdown to your clipboard.

Formula and Logic

The calculator uses weighted average math to determine your final score. For each test component, it first calculates the percentage score: (Score Earned / Max Score) × 100.

It then multiplies that percentage by the component's weight (as a decimal) to get the weighted contribution to your overall grade. All weighted contributions are summed to get your total weighted percentage.

Letter grades are assigned using the standard 4.0 GPA scale: 93-100% is an A, 90-92% is an A-, 87-89% is a B+, and so on down to 0-59% as an F. GPA values are mapped directly to these letter grades.

For custom grading scales, the calculator converts your weighted percentage to the equivalent score on your custom scale using: (Weighted Percentage / 100) × Custom Max Score.

Practical Notes

Always confirm your instructor's specific grading scale before using this tool, as some courses use +/- grade adjustments or alternative percentage ranges for letter grades.

Weight values must add up to exactly 100% for accurate results. If your course uses extra credit or dropped lowest scores, adjust the weight values manually to reflect the final grading structure.

Credit hour weighting: If your final grade is weighted by credit hours (e.g., a 3-credit course counts more than a 1-credit course), adjust component weights to reflect the credit hour ratio.

For GPA calculations, this tool uses the standard 4.0 unweighted scale. Weighted GPA (for AP/IB courses) is not supported here, as it varies by institution.

Save your score breakdowns to track progress over time, especially when preparing for midterm or final grade reviews with academic advisors.

Why This Tool Is Useful

Students can use this calculator to predict final grades before they are posted, helping them identify which assignments to prioritize for study time.

Teachers and academic advisors can use it to verify grade calculations, explain weighted grading structures to students, and check for errors in manual grade entry.

Parents can use the tool to track their child's academic progress and understand how individual test scores impact overall course performance.

It eliminates manual math errors common when calculating weighted grades by hand, especially for courses with many components or complex weighting structures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my total weight is less than 100%?

The calculator will show an error message if your total weight is not 100%. Check that you have entered the correct weight for each component, and that no weights are missing. Some courses include a participation or attendance category that may be easy to overlook.

Can I use this tool for pass/fail courses?

Yes, select the "Percentage" grading scale and enter your scores as normal. You can set a custom passing threshold (e.g., 70%) to check if your weighted score meets the pass/fail requirement for your course.

How do I account for dropped lowest scores?

Manually exclude the dropped test from your entries, or set its weight to 0% so it does not contribute to your overall grade. The calculator will only include components with a weight greater than 0 in the final calculation.

Additional Guidance

Update your test entries as soon as you receive scores to keep an accurate real-time view of your course grade. This helps avoid surprises when final grades are posted.

If your instructor uses a non-standard grading scale (e.g., 90-100 is an A, 80-89 is a B), use the "Custom Scale" option to match their exact percentage ranges, then cross-reference with the letter grade output.

For courses with cumulative finals that replace lower quiz scores, adjust the weight of the final exam to reflect its higher impact, and set the weight of the replaced quizzes to 0%.

Share your score breakdown with your instructor if you believe there is an error in your posted grade, as the detailed component list makes it easy to verify each calculation step.
